- Staying in the morgue was a very bad idea. Elena's started to realise that her being stubborn when it came to being relocated, even to the security the Boarding House gave her, was one of the many stupid decisions she had made in her very short - and possibly now eternal - life. Sitting on the floor by one of the tables with her head in her hands didn't muffle how strong the scent of anything was. No matter how hard she pushed the flesh of her palm against her nose, she could still smell everything; Damon, blood, death. She could smell the lake that claimed her entire life, from her parents, to who she used to be, to who she wanted to be, soaked into the very fibre of her damp clothes.
Elena was usually accepting of the events that occurred in her life, from the Salvatore's returning to Mystic Falls to learning about her ancestry, but the idea that she was dead was something she denied herself to even think about. She just wanted to be herself again, without the amplified senses she knew came with the territory of being a new vampire.
With a deep breath in, she pulled her hands away from her face and ran them through her hair, mussing it. "I have to go see Matt. I need to know that he got out of the car okay." She couldn't bear the thought of losing another person so very important to her, especially when she could've somehow prevented them going off of the bridge. Seeing Matt, knowing he was alive, allowed her to, somehow, believe that everything was okay when it was far from even being in the vicinity of the word.

But there was something more heartbreaking to Elena's end that gave him a bitter taste in his mouth. She chose to be with Stefan, and if he would have died in those moments, he would have been alone and bitter. It was always going to be Stefan. The thought of it alone just made him want to shut his emotions off again and pull away, but this was not about him and Elena anymore. This was about Elena possibly becoming a vampire. She still hadn't fed on anything and all she worried about was Matt, the jock Stefan saved instead of Elena. Typical Stefan move. Always listening to Elena's ridiculous choices.
Slowly, with infinite weariness, he filled his glass with the only thing that could calm him down – whiskey, and a lot of it. "He did. Stefan saved him, Matts in the hospital, he'll be fine. Just stay put and relax. You need to eat something." Filling another glass, he sighs, knowing this would be the longest night he has ever had to face with her. He moved towards Elena and set the glass down beside her. "You need to make a choice." His blue eyes settled on her brown hues, there was a worried look on his face when he reached to grab her hand in order to calm her down.

"Thank you," she said, as he sat the glass down beside her. She said it because that's what the old Elena, the human Elena, would've done. No matter how many times Damon hurt her or the people she cared about, she'd always thank him and count on him for when she really needed someone on her side. Today was no different. He was there when he didn't need to be, where she had given him the option to wipe his hands clean of her. That heart of his was as big as she had always predicted it to be.
She'd been trying to avoid his gaze, to avoid this thread of the conversation. Ignoring the situation always worked for Caroline. It also worked for Elena. How many times did she pass on the opportunity to tell Jenna or Jeremy or anyone in her life about the things she knew? She kept them in the dark because it helped her keep a toe in her old world. Elena glanced up at him, keeping her eyes on his, even finding calmness in their familiar shade. "I don't want to make a choice, Damon," she found herself whispering it. "This can't be happening. I can't be a vampire."
